What is a Replay?

·

Tabletop RPG replays are records of what happened in a session or campaign. They can be used not only as a transcript of a game session, but also a learning tool as to how games are actually played. The well-known Record of Lodoss War is an actual replay of a Dungeons & Dragons campaign, and the anime Chaos Dragon was an anime-replay of a campaign ran in Red Dragon (another JTRPG). Replays are a major form of TRPG content in Japan.

Replays can be done by either a group of people or one person, depending on the game system and the preference of the players. Some game systems are designed for solo play, such as Ironsworn, while others require a group of players and a game master, such as Dungeons & Dragons. Some players enjoy creating and sharing replays of their solo adventures, while others prefer to collaborate with their friends and record their group sessions. There is no right or wrong way to do a replay, as long as you have fun and respect the rules and the rights of the game creators and the other players.
