R&D Department

·

The Kingdom of Lancaster is a nation where magic and technology coexist. The kingdom is constantly at war with its neighboring realms, such as Elmwood.

To gain an edge in these conflicts, the king has established a secret militaristic R&D department, led by the royal mage, Lady Natasha.

The R&D department is responsible for developing and testing new weapons, armor, vehicles, and strategies for the Lancastrian army. The department operates in a secluded fortress, hidden from the public eye and protected by powerful wards and guards. The department employs a mix of mages, engineers, alchemists, and soldiers, who work together to create and experiment with various inventions.

Some prior attempted projects have been:

  • Operation Scalebound: A project to create a weapon that can harness the power of dragonfire, the most destructive force in the world. The project involves capturing and studying dragons, extracting their fire glands, and synthesizing a volatile substance that can be ignited and launched as a projectile. The project is highly dangerous and controversial, as dragons are considered sacred by many cultures.
  • Operation Hogarth : A project to create a series of autonomous metal constructs that can serve as soldiers and siege engines. The project involves forging and enchanting large iron plates, assembling them into humanoid shapes, and imbuing them with a rudimentary artificial intelligence. The project is highly costly and complex, as iron is a rare and valuable resource, and creating a stable and obedient AI is a challenge.
  • The Cid Project: A project to create a flying vessel that can transport troops and supplies across long distances. The project involves designing and building a large wooden hull, attaching a series of propellers and balloons, and installing a magical engine that can generate lift and thrust. The project is highly ambitious and innovative, as flying is a rare and coveted ability, and creating a reliable and safe skyship is a feat.
  • Operation Big Bamma: An experiment that was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of deploying soldiers with explosive ordinance within their blood stream. Soldiers were fed special meals containing highly flammable compounds, as well as a catalytic element that would trigger a combustion event upon the body’s blood pressure dropping or going beyond a certain threshold, effectively a “dead-man’s switch” calibration. These soldiers were to serve as shock troopers and demoralize the enemy by subjecting them to sudden explosive ordinance, forcing the enemy to give a moment’s pause before engaging Lancaster forces.
