Way of the Mantis

In the heart of the bustling city, a figure moves with an uncanny grace. Dressed in simple, flowing robes, their movements are fluid and precise, each step a dance, each gesture a deadly strike.

Their eyes are sharp and focused, their body lean and muscular. Their hands, though seemingly delicate, are strong and unyielding, capable of seizing an opponent with an iron grip. They move with the speed and precision of a praying mantis, their attacks as swift as they are deadly.

Monk Subclass: Way of the Mantis

3rd Level: Mantis Strike
When you choose this tradition at 3rd level, you learn to strike with the speed and precision of a praying mantis. Once per turn, when you hit a creature with one of the attacks granted by your Flurry of Blows, you can impose one of the following effects on that target:

  • It must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw or be knocked prone.
  • It must make a Strength saving throw. If it fails, you can push it up to 15 feet away from you.
  • It can’t take reactions until the end of your next turn.

6th Level: Mantis Grasp
At 6th level, you learn to mimic the mantis’s ability to seize its prey with unyielding grip. When you hit a creature with one of the attacks granted by your Flurry of Blows, you may instead grapple the opponent instead of dealing damage.

11th Level: Mantis Whirlwind
At 11th level, you become a flurry of strikes and blows, just like a mantis attacking its prey. When you use your Flurry of Blows, you can make an additional attack as part of it. Each time you hit a creature with one of these attacks, you can choose another creature within 5 feet of the original target and within your reach. If the original attack roll would hit the second creature, it takes damage equal to half the damage of the original hit.

17th Level: Master of the Mantis
At 17th level, your mastery of the mantis style allows you to effortlessly control the battlefield. Whenever you hit a creature with one of the attacks granted by your Flurry of Blows, you can impose two of the effects from the Mantis Strike feature.
