Here is a simple method to help someone determine what class they might enjoy playing in D&D 5e. This method is based on asking a series of questions related to the person’s preferences and playstyle.

  1. Combat Style: Do you prefer to fight up close and personal, or do you prefer to attack from a distance?
    • Up close: Consider Fighter, Barbarian, Monk, Paladin, or Rogue.
    • Distance: Consider Ranger, Sorcerer, Wizard, or Warlock.
  2. Magic Use: Do you want to use magic, or do you prefer to rely on your physical abilities?
    • Use Magic: Consider Wizard, Sorcerer, Warlock, Cleric, Druid, Bard, Paladin, or Ranger.
    • Physical Abilities: Consider Fighter, Barbarian, Monk, or Rogue.
  3. Role in the Party: Do you want to protect your allies, deal damage, heal, or provide support?
    • Protect: Consider Fighter, Paladin, or Barbarian.
    • Deal Damage: Consider Fighter, Barbarian, Rogue, Sorcerer, Wizard, or Warlock.
    • Heal: Consider Cleric, Druid, or Paladin.
    • Support: Consider Bard, Cleric, or Druid.
  4. Character Background: Do you want your character to have a religious, scholarly, natural, criminal, or mystical background?

  5. Personality: Do you want your character to be serious, humorous, mysterious, straightforward, or complex?

  6. Alignment: Do you see your character as more lawful, chaotic, or neutral? And are they good, evil, or neutral?

  7. Skill Set: Do you want your character to be more focused on physical prowess, magical ability, or a mix of both?

    • Mix of Both: Consider Paladin, Ranger, or Bard.
  8. Social Interaction: Do you want your character to be charismatic and persuasive, or do you prefer to let your actions speak for you?

  9. Backstory: Do you want a tragic backstory, a heroic one, a mysterious one, or a humble one?

Upon completing these questions, tally up which class yields the most votes from one’s answers, and pick from that selection.
